The Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025, commonly known as Martyn’s Law, introduces preparedness and protective-security duties for premises and events within scope. Current statutory and supplementary guidance should be used to determine whether a premises is covered and what is required.
Do not reduce the duty to a sign pack
The Act is about organisational preparedness and reasonably practicable protective measures. A generic collection of signs does not establish compliance. Procedures, staff roles, communication, evacuation, invacuation and other measures may all need consideration.
Where signs may support a plan
Operational signs might help identify reporting points, controlled access, emergency equipment or routes, but public information must not expose sensitive security arrangements or conflict with fire-safety routes.
Check current commencement and guidance
Government guidance is being maintained as the regime is implemented. Dutyholders should check the latest scope, thresholds, notification process and commencement position before acting.
