A clear sign can fail if it is hidden, badly lit, fixed to the wrong surface or placed after the point where someone must make a decision. Plan the position from the normal approach before drilling or applying adhesive.
Check the viewing route
Walk towards the location at a normal pace. Look for doors, stock, vehicles, equipment and visual clutter that could hide the sign. Escape-route arrows should be visible before each decision point.
Match the fixing to the material
- self-adhesive vinyl needs a clean, smooth, dry and compatible surface
- rigid signs may use screws, suitable adhesive pads or other mechanical fixings
- outdoor and temporary boards need secure fixings that account for wind and movement
- do not drill into hidden services or unsuitable building fabric
Height, size and lighting
There is no single mounting height for every sign. Consider viewing distance, approach angle, eye line, obstructions, lighting, accessibility and the purpose of the sign. Use the relevant current standard or competent advice where a formal calculation is needed.
Inspect after installation
Check the finished sign from each approach. Add sign condition and visibility to routine workplace inspections, and replace signs that are faded, damaged or no longer relevant.
