BS 5499 and ISO 7010 Safety Signs

BS 5499 is a family of British standards covering safety signs, notices and related guidance. ISO 7010 registers graphical safety symbols. The standards are related, but they are not interchangeable labels for every product or site decision.

Check the exact product claim

A seller should identify the symbol or standard reference supported by the supplier specification. Broad claims such as “fully compliant” are not useful when the message, artwork, material or installation has not been checked.

Consistency matters on site

When signs are replaced, compare the old and new routes as a complete system. Mixing old text-only signs, different arrow conventions and inconsistent colours can make a route harder to follow.

Use authorised standards

Standards can change and their full text is copyrighted. Obtain the current edition from BSI or another authorised source when a project needs a formal standards assessment.
