The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 organise duties for managing health, safety and welfare on construction projects. Site signs can support those arrangements, but they do not create a safe site by themselves.
Plan signs around the site controls
Start with the construction phase plan, traffic routes, site rules, induction, access controls and emergency arrangements. Signage should reinforce the controls people are expected to follow.
Typical sign locations
- site entrance and visitor reporting point
- PPE and restricted-access boundaries
- pedestrian and vehicle route intersections
- excavations, overhead work and temporary hazards
- fire, first aid and emergency points
- scaffolding, hoarding and public interfaces
Keep temporary signs current
Construction layouts change. Remove signs that no longer apply, replace damaged boards and update arrows when the route moves.
