The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 is the main fire-safety framework for non-domestic premises in England and Wales. Scotland and Northern Ireland use different fire-safety legislation.
Start with the fire-risk assessment
The responsible person must arrange a suitable and sufficient fire-risk assessment and take appropriate precautions. Escape-route and fire-equipment signs form part of those arrangements where they are needed to help people find the route or equipment.
Keep routes consistent
Review the route from every normal approach and decision point. Direction arrows, doors, final exits, changes of level and alternative routes should be checked as one system. A mix of conflicting formats can create hesitation.
Signs do not replace emergency lighting
Photoluminescent signs and powered emergency lighting are different parts of a fire-safety system. Product selection should follow the building arrangements and competent fire-safety advice.
