The corrosive chemical pictogram shows liquid from test tubes damaging a hand and a metal surface. It warns that a substance or mixture may cause severe skin burns and eye damage, and may also be corrosive to metals, depending on its classification.
Where the symbol appears
The red-diamond pictogram appears on relevant chemical labels and is explained in the safety data sheet. A workplace may also use a warning sign near a storage or process area, but that sign does not replace the label on the container.
What to check
- read the label and current safety data sheet before use
- follow the stated storage, handling and emergency controls
- use the PPE, ventilation and segregation identified by the assessment
- keep labels legible and do not transfer chemicals into an unlabelled container
Choosing corrosive warning signage
Start with the location and the message people need on approach. A chemical storage area, process pipe and container label serve different purposes. Check whether the sign needs to identify a general hazard, a mandatory action or emergency equipment as well.
